Cabin Furøya
Furøya, Norway
The site is south-facing on Furøya in Lillesand, shaped like a shallow valley that slopes down towards a lagoon with a beach and wide views of the sea.
The cabin spans the sides of the valley like a low dam, creating a sheltered atrium. At the same time, it preserves a visual connection through the building, from the atrium, through the living spaces, and out towards the bay and the horizon. The building consists of a solid concrete base and a series of light roof planes at varying heights. Between them, glass and timber cladding filter the transition between the atrium and the garden. The fragmented roof structure relates to the movement of the landscape and follows the shape of the valley.
The roof construction combines steel and glulam. Slender steel columns and beams support a continuous glulam ceiling that runs uninterrupted from the interior into the covered outdoor areas on both sides. The material palette consists of concrete in the base and floors, with ash and ash veneer used for walls and built-in furniture. Dark surfaces are treated with stain, paint, and lacquer, bringing the exterior walls, ceiling, steel columns, and details together into a coherent whole.
