UiO - Student Library Sophus Bugge

Oslo, Norway

Sophus Bugges Hus at Blindern (University of Oslo) was originally completed in 1962 as part of the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of History and Philosophy. The building houses a 700-seat reading room, auditoriums, seminar rooms and student workspaces, as well as a vestibule, cloakrooms and storerooms.

The building has been completely rehabilitated technically both in terms of functionality and visual appearance. The upgrade included new ventilation, cooling and heating system, improved lighting, enhanced insulation and acoustics. In addition, better daylight conditions and usability in the vestibule have been achieved by opening up the room to the south. Following completion, the building has been awarded BREEAM Excellent sustainability certification.

A new terrace to the south increases the use value of the park as a social space, the terrace has a light expression and has been made "reversible" for the benefit of conservation. Where it has been possible, the original architectural expression has also been restored.

The building is yellow-listed by the City Antiquities Authority (Byantikvaren) and is located directly adjacent to listed buildings on the Blindern plateau.
