Haakon VII Gate

Trondheim, Norway

At the edge of a larger residential development, five colorful wooden houses form a small cluster overlooking a park that slopes down towards the popular Ladestien walkway and the historic Leangen Gård estate.

The buildings are carefully placed within the sloping terrain, following the natural topography. Slight rotations between the houses create varied outdoor spaces while ensuring optimal daylight and views for every apartment. To harmonize with the surrounding landscape, the volumes step down towards the park. The buildings range from two to four stories, with partially recessed ground floors and upper levels set back to create generous roof terraces. Inspired by Trondheim’s tradition of colorful wooden architecture, the houses are clad in warm, earthy tones, each with its own distinct character.

The apartments vary in size but share key qualities: at least one balcony or terrace, often two excellent views, and a strong connection to the green surroundings. By concentrating staircases, elevators, and technical cores at the center of each building, living spaces are oriented along the facades to maximize light and openness. In addition to shared gardens and outdoor areas between the houses, each building offers one or two communal roof terraces - spaces that can be enjoyed individually or as vibrant meeting points for the residents.
