Starthus på Kvitfjell

Kvitfjell, Norway

The start hut sits exposed at the mountain's summit, low and horizontal against the bare rock, anchored in the open, windswept terrain without disturbing the skyline.

To the east, a foundation wall of rubble and concrete. To the west, the building opens through glass and a drystone wall. The roof rests on two laminated beams shaped like skis, cantilevered outward in the direction of descent. The proportions follow a 4:3 ratio, developed in collaboration with NRK ORTO to suit the scale of the television screen. The drystone wall doubles as a windbreak for skiers and coaches waiting at the start.

Typically Norwegian materials have been used, such as stone and naturally weathered timber, together with glass and steel details.
