Cabin Humløya
Lillesand, Norway
Cabin Humløya is accessible by boat along the shoreline southeast of the town of Lillesand. The cabin nestles between rocky landscape, set slightly back from a restored and modernized old pier and boathouse. An artificial landfill has been removed to restore the original coastline, creating a sheltered beach ideal for swimming. The buildings are surrounded by lawns, existing vegetation, and newly planted greenery. Pathways are laid with concrete steppingstones, and several outdoor living areas are arranged on concrete and wooden decks. The main outdoor space is shaded by an open pergola.
The property consists of five separate buildings. The main wing, housing an open-plan living room and kitchen/dining area is sheltered under a horizontal roof that also extends over two bedroom units and the outdoor circulation zones. The main bedroom and guest room are positioned on elevated levels beneath separate roofs that overlap the main roof, forming covered walkways.
Inside, the floors are finished in concrete and ash. Interior walls are primarily ash, while the bathrooms feature concrete and water-resistant thermo ash. Thermo ash is also used for the exterior cladding. Ceilings are made of painted cross-laminated timber. The roofs are insulated and topped with sedum, allowing the small cluster of buildings to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape when viewed from the nearby rocks.
